First practice of the season is this Tuesday!

The season for the Man O’ War swim team starts Tuesday at the YMCA Aquatic Center. The Developmental Team members and new members need to show up at 7:00 PM for assessments. Make sure you bring swim suits and swim goggles that fit. Try them on today don’t find out at practice that your suit is too small, and your goggles leak.

The stroke group with coach Lucky will start at 7:30 PM and we will swim a full practice until 8:30PM

The season calendar is posted on our blog.

See everyone Tuesday!  It will be a great season.

Lyn Meena was honored by Orange County Special Olympics posthumously as the volunteer of the year. Lyn coached with the developmental group for 13 years and attended all the county, area and state games for swimming. Accepting the award in her honor were her son Elliot daughter Ameilia and Victor her husband. Coach Apryle is the sophisticated lady standing between Elliot and Amelia.

First Practice for 2016

Welcome to the 2016 Man O’ War swim team season.  In the right sidebar if you click on the 2015 schedule the 2016 schedule will appear.  I will get the 2015 date changed as soon as I figure out how to do it, but the schedule is correct as of today.  Our first practice of the season will be Tuesday June 7th.  The developmental team needs to arrive at 7pm for assessments. The developmental coaches will only be doing assessments this session, no practice.

There are no assessments with the Stroke group.  If you were already swimming with coach Lucky in the stroke group last season, you should plan on being at the YMCA at 7:30pm ready to swim.  There is no goggle fitting this year, so make sure you bring goggles that work and a swim suit.  The stroke group will be holding a full practice.

It looks to be an exciting season. Can’t wait to get started.

Some sad news

Lyn Meena a long time Man O’ War swim coach lost her battle with cancer yesterday.  Lyn was a wonderful coach and she loved our Special Olympics Program. I have posted her son’s letter below.  RIP Lyn you will be missed.

Coach Lucky

Dear Friends and Family,

It is with a heavy heart to inform you that my mother, Ruby, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday afternoon from a battle with cancer that began earlier this year. My father, sister, uncle, and I were by her side at the Orlando Regional Medical Center all week, and we remained there through her final breath.

First and foremost, I must apologize for my lack of communication throughout this situation.  I know this catches many of you off guard, but it has been an aggressive battle and this past week things took a turn for the worse. Please believe me though when I say there have been moments that I have tried to share this with some of you.  However the reality always turned out to be that conversing with you served as the guiltless distraction I needed.

More importantly, please know that my mother did not suffer, nor was she ever angry or scared.  She was as real as it gets these past three months, and will always be the strongest person I know.  And in the end, I can now look back and see the beautiful lining that even though cancer won the physical battle, it failed at defeating her grace and compassion.

Going forward, in an attempt to have this matter somewhat private and off of social media, I will keep communications open at the following website – www.rubystrong.org, and the password = rs (two letters)…..Bare with me as I just pieced the site together so needs some updates, but feel free to pass along the info to others.

The site will contain information regarding services, etc. and instead of gifts or flowers I would respectfully like to request that you make a donation to the Special Olympics swim team that my mother coached for in Orlando, the ‘Man-O-Wars’.  The website has details of where to send a check or make a donation for MOW, or you can make a donation through my everydayhero page (really hoping to crack that $1 barrier).

As for the future, when the day comes my mother will be buried at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY (right next to Colonel Sanders, no joke).  Additionally, there will be a memorial held in Orlando a few weeks later, most likely around Lake Eola, and I will also be swimming Lucky’s Lake Swim in her honor that same weekend.  This past year my mother swam Lucky’s Lake twice, and this summer we hoped to swim the lake together.  Swimming was always a haven for my mother, whether participating or spectating, and anyone wishing to join me across the lake is more than welcome.

In closing, since I probably will be introverting for a while, I want to first apologize in advance if I fail to respond, but second I would like to make a request (or two): this afternoon, during the playing of ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ before the Derby, please find a mint julep to sip as that was one of my mothers favorite traditions.  And lastly, if you have a mother to hug please give her an extra squeeze, from me, tomorrow on Mother’s Day.

Signing off,

Elliot Meena

Special Olympics Swimming Coming Up!!!!

Well it’s that time of year and we are less than two months before rolling into the 2016 Special Olympics swimming season for the Man O’ War team.  I believe this is our 23rd year . . . whew!  It should be a great season for swimming.  Our start date will be Tuesday June 7th (this is the first Tuesday in June) at the YMCA Aquatic Center.  We will have assessments for Apryle’s group the first night and Lucky’s group should come prepared to swim, so don’t forget your goggles and suits.  I will post the start times as we get a bit closer to the first practice and I will get out the calendar once we firm up meet dates.

Looking forward to the 2016 Season,

Coach Lucky

State Meet

State meet is only two weekends away (Oct 3rd & 4th) and we have only two practices left in the season.  It has been a great season with all of our athletes swimming well.  As always we were given fewer spots than swimmers deserving to go, and we have many that won first places at area games that did not make the cut.  The roster decision had to be made quickly as we were only given about two days before the entry deadline after receiving our allotment number.  We did not have a practice during this period so everyone had to be confirmed individually.  Relays were stacked with our fastest people and then everyone else needed two individual firsts at area games to qualify.  There were some last minute adjustments made when some qualified swimmers informed us that they could not attend.  When the dust settled the list below is our State Championship 2015 roster.  Please be aware we must have everyone on the roster to attend or our relays will not be able to compete.
Jesse Greve
Gregg Dedic
Ian Soules
Mike Mallamas
Jason Munoz
Richard Green
Aaron Brock
William Westman
Amanda Rivas
Lauren Bergquist
Lori Thomas
Erin Maciarz

Developmental Group Entries:

Isa Cubillos
Ryan Letcher
Edwin Baeza

Area Games

Congratulations to all of our swimmers that competed at Area Games. I don’t have the final results yet but I saw a whole boat load of blue ribbons being carried around by our swimmers.  I am very proud of all of you.  I will post any new team records and the final results as soon as I get them.  I will not know for a few more weeks what our allotment is for State Games, but as soon as I receive it I will let everyone know who qualified. I look forward to seeing everyone at practice on Tuesday.

County Games Tuesday

A friendly reminder that County Games (Time Trials) are this Tuesday.  Everyone try to be at the Aquatic Center by 7pm.  We will be needing parents to help us with timing.  Swimmers should wear their racing suits.

Congrats to Jesse Greve and Ian Soules they just had a great masters swim meet in South Florida at the 10th annual June Krauser Summer Splash.  Jesse broke his own 50 meter freestyle team record with a time of 30.16 (he is getting really close to breaking that 30 second barrier).  Jesse also won 9 gold medals in the 25-29 age group and I assume the high point award for that age group as well.  Ian brought home 6 gold medals in the 19-24 age group.

County games moved to the 28th !!!!

Due to so many of our athletes being gone on the 21st of July we have switched the county games to July 28th at 7pm at the YMCA Aquatic Center.  The calendar has been updated.  Please remember that you must get a time at the county games in order to participate in the area games.

Great fun at Coach Lucky’s annual pool party this morning with the team.  We hope everyone is having a great 4th of July wherever you might be!

Meet canceled this weekend.

The National Invitational has been canceled for Saturday June 13th due to small numbers of entries from other teams.

Congratulations to Jesse Greve who had a great meet in the Jimi Flowers Classic.  Jesse set two new team records 1:05. 87 in the 100m free and 33.78 in the 100m fly. He also won seven gold medals in his events at the meet (just like Mark Spitz, next time he will have to enter eight events so he can be like Michael Phelps). Strong Work Jesse!!
