A fond final farewell to our Friend Duck, R.I.P.

Farewell Duck,  a good life but an unfortunate grisly demise, either a raccoon, possum or zombie took out our duck friend known as Duck late last night.  Duck was approaching his five hundredth crossing. Duck was one of the most famous of the Lucky’s Lake swimmers and one of the most aggravating, but still, he will be missed.  If you received an “I got ducked at Lucky’s Lake Swim sticker” hang on to it as it will surely become a collectible, no more will be made.  Duck was buried (very deeply cause we are still not quite certain about zombie aspect of the incident) overlooking the lake where he will be annoyed for all eternity that we are still not swimming in a straight line.  If you feel an underwater peck when going off course it is most likely the ghost of Duck correcting you.  A short film was made about Duck in 2014 you can see it HERE.  Goodbye Duck RIP

Duck, RIP. They will be creating poems about you, whether you like it or not.

Duck, swimming with Mi Hoshino. Duck would only swim with Mi, the rest of us were not worthy, he would only give us attention if we needed correcting.

1st Annual Pool Toy Float Parade rattled with controversy!

What began as an amazing event rapidly broke down into sheer chaos in our 1st annual pool toy float parade. With only one minute left in the timetable for the final judging of the pool floats The Director of Awesomeness (Mike Friedman) was nowhere to be found. Rumors were circulating that he left early to have emergency open heart surgery, which is a completely unforgivable excuse to shirk his important responsibilities, but the truth has been ferreted out, and we have determined that he left to attend a garage sale. Although in the judging bylaws this is an acceptable excuse for absences, Lucky did start immediate impeachment proceedings, which were confirmed, and Tom Welch was elevated from his current position of director of the Lake Cane anti-terrorist committee and lead dessert taste tester to the Director of Awesomeness. After a brief acceptance speech, which seemed much longer that it really was, all things Lake Cane returned to normal and the festive event proceeded without other instances.   Late reports from the Michael Friedman camp suggest there may be a later coup d’etat attempt to try to regain his position as director of awesomeness, but Tom was seen borrowing Lucky’s zombie hunting razor yo-yo so there may be some resistance. We will keep you updated.

Many thanks to all that volunteered to make this wonderful event happen, and special thanks to the amazing Jay Madigan Executive, Director of the Lake Cane Restoration Society, who spearheaded the event. We saw many neighbors for the first time attending the event and we continued to raise awareness of the Lake Cane Restoration Society throughout the community. Over $1000 was raised for the Lake Cane Restoration Society.

If you would like to download some photos from the event taken by Saint Jacquie the link is here:  LCRS float parade photos

Special thanks to the band Lift who provided amazing music throughout the entire fete. http://liftirishband.weebly.com/about.html

Three very lucky folks won rain barrels in our raffle and if repeated brain trauma from Underwater Hockey had not been occurring I would list whom they were. I do remember, on the other hand, the judges and winners of the 1st annual pool toy float parade, which are listed below:

  1. Most dedicated to the Cause (Judged by Lucky) – The sole criteria for this award is who offers Lucky the most lucrative bribe.
      1. The Winner was Jake Meisenheimer who’s swimming cockroach was also the first pool float to finish the swim, which is not surprising as cockroaches will end up ruling the world. Not only was nepotism in play, but Jake was the only person to offer Lucky a bribe – fixing the blog so it could post pictures again.         Clearly, he has not come through, yet, on his bribe.
  2. People’s choice (Jerry’s pick based on dockside buzz)
      1. The winner was Steve and his incredibly long tube representing the actual size of the lake cane monster.
  1. Most Awesome (Judged by the newly appointed director of Awesome)
    1. The Winner was Simba and his Wilson Float

4.Silliest (Judged by the Minister of Silly Floats-Hugh)

  1. The winner was Ron Davis, who misspelled Lake Cane on his float and nearly caused the strangulation of his dog, Digger, with his fabulous noose around the neck dog pool toy design. PETA has now placed us on their watch list.

5.Most blatant product placement (Judged by LCRS Executive Director Jay Madigan)

  1. The winner was Pete Gold and his Narwhale with a Lucky’s Lake Swim bumper sticker placement.

6.“What the heck is going on now” (Judged by the lake swim matron saint, Jacquie)

  1. The winner was (I don’t remember who it was as I’m typing this, but the entry was the ring Float with the bell, Swim Trophy, and flashing thingies).

Pancake breakfast tomorrow, Memorial Day Swim time

Swim time on MEMORIAL DAY will be 7:45 AM

Come join the Lake Cane Restoration Society Saturday, May 20th at 7:45 AM  as it celebrates 28 years of Lucky’s Lake Swim.  There will be a pancake breakfast,  the first annual Pool Toy Float Parade, a raffle for rain barrels and other cool stuff and, of course, the lake swim. You don’t have to have a pool toy float to swim but all the cool people will be towing one.

So if you want to participate in the 1st Annual Pool Toy Float parade here are the Rules:

  1. You must have been a swimmer that has already completed a Lucky’s Lake Swim (No first timers pulling a buoy)
  2. The Float must be “mostly” G-rated.
  3. You may decorate the float but don’t use any decorations that might come off in the water or pollute the water.
  4. Nobody can ride on the float.
  5. It is best to have it blown up before you come, or most of the way, because we don’t have that many air compressors.
  6. The float should be attached to a safer swimmer buoy for towing, you have to figure out how to attach it.
  7. You must take your float home with you.

The Pool Toy Float Contest categories are the following:

  1. Most dedicated to the Cause (determined by Lucky – The sole criteria for this award is who offers Lucky the most lucrative bribe if he get no offers he will award the prize to himself)
  2. People’s choice (Jerry’s pick based on dockside buzz)
    3. Most Awesome (as chosen by the director of Awesome)
4.Silliest (determined by the so titled for the day Minister of Silly Floats-Hugh)
5.Most blatant product placement (Jay’s choice)
6.“What the heck is going on now” (picked by the lake swim matron saint)

Celebrate with us on May 20th and more . . .

May 20th is the “official” 28th birthday of Lucky’s Lake swim so come celebrate with us and help raise some funds for the Lake Cane Restoration Society.  There will be a raffle for 3 rain barrels (you must be present to win) and for some other cool items.  All proceeds go to the Lake Cane Restoration Society, which works hard to keep the lake swimmable.

We are also having our 1st annual pool toy float parade.  Bring a blow-up pool toy to tow across lake cane (let’s keep this PG rated) or you can make or decorate you own.  You may not have a rider on the float. There is no entry fee, other than loss of respect among your peers, and there will be some sort of awards but the categories have not been hammered out yet.

According to Jay Madigan the executive director of the Lake Cane Restoration Society (LCRS) the first 100 people to give a $20 donation to LCRS will receive a Native Florida Plant (no it won’t be Cannabis Sativa) or eight tickets for a chance to win a rain barrel (no the barrel will be empty, sorry we are aware that there is a drought going on).  So bring money, donate, and become a Friend of the LCRS.  Jay is shooting for 100 Friends for the society.

Luis makes us proud, New Lake swim records, and more . . .

Big Congrats to Luis Ortiz.  Luis, a long time Lucky’s Lake Swimmer, Friday competed in the National High School Triathlon Championships representing Dr. Phillips High School.  Luis finished 2nd place overall, and he’s just a junior!! You have made us all very proud, Luis!  (Lucky would like to take full credit for all of Luis’s accomplishments for providing him some secret training advice years ago “I studied the sport for years and I told him if he wanted to get better in triathlons he needed to swim, cycle and run faster. If more people took my sage advice they would finish much higher in their races. Thank goodness Luis listened to me.

Congratulations to Lake Highland swimmers Jordan Agliano age (12) and Alix Roy age (16) for setting two new Lucky’s Lake Swim age group records.  Jordan broke the 11-12 yo girls record by nearly 2 minutes with a blistering time of 13:09. Alix broke the 15-16-year-old girls’ record with a time of 12:47 making her one of a handful of swimmers to break the 13-minute barrier and the 2nd fastest overall female swim time. To check out our records click here.

Twenty-two years ago we set a Lucky’s Lake Swim record for total participants in one day at 28 (current record is 474)  it was Jacquie’s and Lucky’s wedding day and they got married in the backyard and “surprisingly” had a swim after the wedding.

What were you doing 22 years ago today? Well these folks were swimming Lucky Lake Swim after Jacquie and Lucky got married. Two people in the photo swam today Lucky and Don Combs. Jacquie planned on swimming that day 22 years ago but decided the wedding dress would slow her down too much, and yes Lucky was wearing a speedo under his tux.

If you are reading this on Saturday, these Lucky’s Lake Swimmers are in the middle of Tampa Bay swimming. I can think of about 100 easier ways to have an excuse to go somewhere just to drink beer. Consider this, anytime you here Heff say “hey I’ve got this great idea” it’s probably not, even when he finishes with “and then we’ll drink beer”.  If you want to follow these guys current swimming and gustatory accomplishments then go to Dave Heffernan’s facebook page.

Congrats to Alix Roy , a Lake Highland Swimmer, record breaker in the 15-16 girls age group with a time of 12:47, now that's cranking.

Fantastic Event today!!!

The weather was perfect; the preacher was awesome, the volunteers were magnificent, and the food, well, we ran out so it must have been great.(over 320 were served)  Thanks to all the efforts of our many volunteers a superb time was had by all.   Preacher Tom was able to keep Lucky not only awake but attentive (roughly equivalent to the twelve tasks of Hercules). LCRS  had Biosphere plants out for everyone to consider, Joe did the premier showing of his Lake Cane video, Gene flipped pancakes in a speedo (you don’t see that every day nor would you want to), Duck bit someone 22 times (a new record). We had around 400 people in attendance, 150 swam, and 15 were new. And as a bonus, we recruited one new underwater hockey player.

For the excellent news, we raised nearly $4000 for the YMCA youth scholarship program ($600 from a generous donation of proceeds from Rowdy Gaines book signing).  Please help us break that 4K barrier by clicking on the link to the PayPal button.

Nicolas Castano set his first world record, being bit by duck 22 times. Most people would stop putting their hands in the pen after two or three bites, but Nicholas wants to be a politician and he keep saying I'll do it again but this time it will be different. He will make a great senator one day.

Easter Swim, Rowdy book signing and more . . .

The 7th annual Easter Service/Swim/Pancake breakfast is this Sunday.  There was a FAKE NEWS email accidently sent out with the incorrect date and start time.  The actual date is Sunday, April 16th with a start time of 6:59 AM.  It looks like it is shaping up to be our biggest Easter event ever.  Preacher Tom has been working on his Magnum Opus sermon for the last twenty-seven years, but regretfully this is not what you will hear.  This Easter he will deliver a sermon that will be dumbed down to Lucky’s level, but yet enjoyable and life altering for all in attendance. Make sure to arrive before sunrise as the sermon will start spot on. Please remember to bring chairs and blankets to sit on. The lake swim will start shortly after the sermon and the breakfast will open up to the non-swimming attendees right after the sermon.  All offerings received will be donated to the YMCA Aquatic Center Scholarship fund.  If you can’t attend but would like to donate you can click here to PayPal your donation.  The scholarship funds help many that would not be able to swim and it helps support the YMCA’s Special Olympic program which many of the volunteer coaches are Lucky’s Lake Swimmers.  As an added bonus Rowdy Gaines (Triple Olympic Gold medalist and NBC Olympic Sportscaster) will be joining us for the swim and he will be doing a book signing with all the profits being donated to the scholarship fund.

The Easter Swim had a nice write-up in the latest issue of the Central Florida Lifestyle Magazine you can read the article here.

Thinking about trying to set a Lucky Lake Swim record well then take a look at our current records and plan accordingly.  LUCKY’S LAKE SWIM RECORDS

The orginal storyline was The 2 sexyist men in Orlando, but then Lucky photobombed the shoot and they had to change the entire cover story. You can read the articles on the Easter Swim here and the cover story here.

7 swimmers have suits ripped off during todays swim and more…

In what can only be described as a bizarre incident,  7 Lucky’s Lake Swimmers had their suits completely torn from them by some unknown person/ water being during todays lake swim. Some believe it was the lake otter gone psycho or perhaps the lake cane monster, but others speculate they noticed a couple of teenage scuba divers enter the lake from Turkey Lake road a few minutes before the first reported incident.  There were no wetsuit-wearing victims only speedos and the majority were wearing Lucky’s Lake Swim Logo wear.  Saha Fernosh said it was a horribly traumatic experience, referring to the post swim run to her car, she did admit she enjoyed the applause and cheers.  Tom Welch, on the other hand, said it was a largely enjoyable experience and he hopes it happens again.  Gene who exited the water without a suit, said ” I can’t remember if I started with or without a suit” which may bring the total number of victims to eight.  4/1/2017

Don’t forget our EASTER Sunday  Eat/Pray/Swim   Click here to see the video

Service at sunrise (bring your own chairs and blankets)  Non-swimmers will eat right after the service and swimmers as they come in.  A great time to bring your family over.  All offerings/donations will be given to the YMCA Aquatic Center scholarship program.  A great program that helps many in need to learn to swim and it also helps our Special Olympic swimmers.

Water temp in high 60’s and more . . .

Yes the water temperature is now in the high 60s with more folks showing up and a higher percentage of swimmers in wetsuits.  That’s correct you read that right.  This is the “Lucky’s Lake Swim Paradox”  When the water drops below 70 degrees the colder is gets the higher the percentage of swimmers in the lake are without wetsuits. There is a very valid scientific reason for this . . . extreme cold is highly selective for mentally unstable people that are incapable of understanding the need for a wetsuit.

Jerry K. (One of our superstar volunteers checking folks in at the Swim Shack) has started the Aquatic Quote of the Week which he is displaying on the whiteboard each Saturday.  If you have a good quote pass it on to Jerry please do so.  Lucky contributed the first quote of the week.

I’m an Aquaholic, I’m powerless over my addiction, and I’m here to binge.

“Doc Lucky”

Speaking to other highfaluting  literary stuff – Barb Abney’s poem was selected by the Lake Cane Restoration Society’s Poet Laureate as this LCRS meeting’s winner.  The poem is now in the running with many other poems as the greatest poem of all time, final selection date is scheduled for some time in the future. For all of you poetry buffs out there below is the complete uncensored version.

Finally regarding other artistic ventures of Lake Cane Swimmers please check out the new short film “How not to open a Safe” featuring two of our notable swimmers Doc Lucky and Tom “The preacher man”  Lucky and Tom attempt to open  a safe (with possible treasure inside) that has not been opened in 50 years.  This has a much better ending that the opening of Al Capone’s vault. Sadly, the selections for the academy award for short films has already been determined, but they may have a shot for the finals of the Dumb and Dumber film festival, as they have been notified it will be screened on Feb 31st, they are pumped.

If you are a wall swimmer and labor over figuring out good workouts check out this website which offers online personalized workouts.

Finally we appreciate all the board members that came to the Lake Cane Restoration Society meeting on Thursday.  It was great to see such a good turnout and all the great activity. As always Jay ran a super meeting (meaning we finished on time) The food was great!!! Many Thanks to Pammie Sammies.  Tom and Jay stayed behind to knock Pam off a ladder, we will see if we can continue to have meetings there . . . likely depends on how fast the swelling of her chin goes down.
