Hurricane aftermath and more . . .

We just got notified that there is a shortage of blood in Central Florida so it is very timely that the Bloodmobile will be at Lucky’s Lake swim in the morning.  Many thanks ahead of time to all those that are donating blood!

If you are still without hot showers and electricity the YMCA Aquatic Center is happy for the community to come in for a shower and charge of electronic devices. You don’t have to be a member.

The Lake Cane Restoration Society had a very successful meeting at Pammie’s Sammies. The meeting ran smoothly with the exception of  “Bindergate” which was interesting to watch (you had to be there). We will be reporting further on “Bindergate” as more information comes forward.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Frogman 5K Night Ops swim on Nov 11th  Click here to sign up!

Two different perspectives of the Hurricane Irma swim one from each side of the lake. Thanks to Randy for filming the two individuals of “questionable intelligence” that he noticed swimming the lake in the morning.

Happy New Year from Lucky’s Lake Swim!

Well, 27 brave souls swam into the new year braving the wind and waves (up to 3 inch swells) and frigid waters – 67 degrees  (know Don will make some snarky comment about how he is swimming in 37 degree water in the serpentine, but that is only thirty degrees colder than us, and if you use “Kentucky math” and take away the zero, which everyone knows represents nothing, then he is really only swimming in water 3 degrees colder, which is really no big deal; therefore stop all the chest thumping Don) .  Today was our “official” (this means if Sam says we have to do it then it becomes “official”) swim without a wetsuit day.  About half the folks did the swim sans wetsuit, while the other half were supposed to make an L shape with their fingers, and hold it to their foreheads during the photo to designate that they were losers; however we realized that it was all the people  that did not attend that were the losers. (If Ron can get his butt out of bed and drive the 350 feet to come to the lake swim then so should you . . . wait, Ron’s is not in the photo . . . never mind.)

Reminder the Lake swim is at 7:45am tomorrow (friday) and Saturday.  Back to the regular swim schedule on Monday.

Water Temp 81 (perfect), raffle winner, and . . .

The water temp is perfect at 81 degrees. You would think everyone would be falling all over each other trying to get here to swim, but the numbers are down. I refer to this as Lucky’s Lake swim Fall paradox. The better the water temp, the fewer folks show, go figure; however it may due to this email I received below (my comments in red)

Hi Lucky,

I’d like to say that their is something similar to the Loch Ness Monster living in your lake (of course there is, it’s called thelake cane monster), but perhaps it is just a very large carp (no, the carp we added were 10-12 inches, just small enough for the pelicans to eat).
This morning i was swimming back to your beach.  I got a bit off course (been there, done that) and ended up down by one of your neighbors’.   About 3/4 of the way to touch down, i was broadsided by another swimmer, or so i thought (it was a swimmer, just not human).  Something very large (Ron) crashed into me and knocked me sideways.  I looked up to apologize for crashing into another swimmer (you didn’t have to, it was likely Ron’s fault).   i got the words “I apolo….”  part way out of my mouth before i realized that there was NO ONE THERE! (must not have been Ron, he couldn’t have swam away that fast).
The fish (“Slimbo” is his/her name,  the monster does not like being called a “fish”) that ran into me had to have been at least 4′ long, maybe more (you probably bumped into its head which is about 4feet wide).  I felt a significant impact when it collided with me (this is covered in your release form, I think in paragraph 3 or 4).  Anyway, it kind of shocked and frightened me (not recoverable damages) and made me swim faster (you should pay extra for that) then usual  so i pulled my calf muscle (okay you don’t have to pay extra).  After realizing how ridiculous it would be to drown myself because i’d run into an innocent fish (the monster is not innocent he/she is hazing you) i calmed down and swam back with just my arms.  LOL!!!!
The Rollins college swim team joined us for a swim Saturday before last and they had a killer breakfast afterwards which made me want to swim for Rollins.

Video has an old underwater photo of our team

This is a video story from Aquatics International.  It has a old photo of our team underwater in the story.
You can see the video here.

Our numbers have been a bit thin on Fridays.  Please come join us this Friday for a bit of UWH fun. Although many may not know this, playing underwater hockey on a Friday brings you good luck the rest of the week. I don’t remember who said this but I’m pretty sure is was either Confucius or Mao Zedong.

Swimming, Growing Bolder films and more . . .

Great news!  The water temperature is now 84 degrees, and although I don’t recommend pulling out the wetsuits yet, it is now “almost” comfortable getting in the lake.  Mid September through October are the glory days for swimming open water in Florida (other than the lake being dark in the morning). We usually don’t get any better swimming conditions than we will have for the next two months, so come on out and enjoy the nice water clarity and temperature.

Rollins College swim team will be joining us on Oct 4th for a lake swim (I expect some records to fall).  This is the first time that Rollins College has come out as a team, although their coach Rich Morris and several individual swimmers have done the swim.  They will be having a breakfast for the team privately catered, so just to give everyone heads up that will be going on as a separate event.  But, even though you may not be able to sneak some food from the Rollins Swim Team breakfast, the good news is, The Gladiators (Orlando’s 14u water polo team) will be giving out free muffins that morning as part of their raffle they will be holding. The winner last year was our very own lake swimmer  Mike Sasso, winning a tidy $850 .  Not bad for a $5 raffle ticket.

Mike Sasso wins $850 in the raffle for the Gladiator water polo club's trip to the national invitational. If Mike owes you money now is a great time to collect! Mike thanks all the Lucky's Lake Swimmers that bought tickets that were losers . . . but at least we all got a muffin.

Mike Sasso won $850 in the raffle held by the Gladiators water polo club last year.  This year it could be you!  So make sure you buy a raffle ticket $5 on Oct 4th at the Lake swim.

If you have not checked out Growing Bolder TV’s episode on the  filming of The Zombie Cause,  you definitely need to give it a look WATCH NOW CLICK HERE.  The episode features many  lake swimmers that starred as zombies.  Mike Black and Tom Welch give some nice dialog from a zombie’s perspective.  As always Growing Bolder did an amazing job. (Our friends at Growing Bolder have done several features on Lucky’s Lake swim together totaling over 75 thousand views, which is amazing, and the counts keep growing.  If you haven’t seen them they are worth watching and sending the link to friends that might be thinking about swimming the lake  Lucky’s Lake SwimJaws Midnight Swim, Rowdy Gaines does Lucky’s Lake Swim)

Hydrilla, more scary than the lake cane monster.

The carp are all in but the hydrilla keep growing.  It will likely take 6 to 8 months before we start seeing the impact of the carp on the hydrilla.  We do not want to oversupply the lake with Carp as they would end up eating everything. The carp which were placed are 10 inches, they grow to about 4 feet in size.
